My idea for developing flexible learning into my course:
One of the compulsory units our students are required to complete in order to gain the National Certificate in Computing Level 2 is:
Unit Standard 112 - Produce information using word processing functions
Click here for the NZQA Performance Criteria http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/framework/search/results.do
The flexible learning component I will be integrating into this course is to support performance criteria
1.3 Mail merge documents are created and merging options are applied in accordance with the output required.
Although this is appears to be a short performance criteria, the amount of time taken by learners to understand the process of creating a mail merge is lengthy.
Items for me to consider:
Access and Equity
“Access and equity are important to preserve so that all people have an opportunity to reach their potential.”
Ensuring all learners have access to the material, this will be available for use on the CLC computers and would need to be included in any distance resources for those students who are unable to attend a CLC.
At present all our courses are open entry and have no fees.
Sustainability
- Consider amount of printing learners are producing and is this necessary
- The flexible material will be online with supporting handouts which learners can use as a quick reference guide

Good to see a start.. so your focus is access. How will people access? Will they have to come in to a CLC to obtain an instruction book (as it is now), will they be able to obtain the book by postal service? Will they be able to freely access the book online? Or will they require a login and pasword. If your plan encompases the creation of new materials, you might want to refer to the Polytechnic's Intellectuall Property Policy - in short - publish it and copyright it so that others can freely access and make their own copies.
ReplyDeleteAnd then there is a potential to consider accessibility issues within the content of the thing you are teaching. Will people have free access to the software needed to learn the task you are teaching, or will they have to buy it? Will they have to come in to a CLC to access that software freely? Or will the CLCs start teaching people a wider range of software, including free software, so that people can learn that there is a choice, and that they need not necessarily buy or pirate software to do the thing you are teaching them to do?
